Israeli FM: 'Our Oscar Goes to Scarlett'

09-07-2014

JERUSALEM, Israel -- Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman praised actress Scarlett Johansson for resigning from Oxfam over its support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction movement against Israel.

Lieberman said Johansson, who's worked with Oxfam since 2007, took a "clearly principled stand against those who disguise their classic anti-Semitism under false pretenses."

"Our Oscar goes to Scarlett," the foreign minister said on his Facebook page.

Last week, Johansson resigned from Oxfam over what she described as "incompatible" positions over the BDS movement.

Their diverse stands over the divestment movement surfaced over Johansson's Super Bowl commercial for SodaStream, an Israeli manufacturing company headquartered in Ma'ale Adumim, a city 20 minutes outside Jerusalem. The company employs 500 Palestinian Arabs among its 1,300 workers.

Oxfam refers to Ma'ale Adumim as an illegal "West Bank" settlement.
