Israel's Barry Rubin Succumbs to Cancer

JERUSALEM, Israel -- U.S.-born author, professor, and terrorism expert Barry Rubin died Monday morning after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 64.

His family posted an announcement of his death on Rubin's Facebook page.

"To our great sadness, Barry Rubin passed away this morning. He was surrounded by his wife and children. Your love, support and prayers have been greatly appreciated. There will be a shiva [seven-day mourning period] and a funeral, details to follow soon."

Among his many accomplishments, Rubin served as director of the Global Research for International Affairs Center at the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center, as well as editor of MERIA (Middle East Review of International Affairs).

He was also a professor at the Interdisciplinary Center and editor of the Turkish Studies journal.

His latest book, Israel: An Introduction, was published by the Yale University Press. He also authored The Israel-Arab Reader, The Long War for Freedom: The Arab Struggle for Democracy in the Middle East, and The Truth about Syria.

Rubin is survived by his wife, Judith, and their two children.
