The American Civil Liberties Union is suing the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors over its decision to restore a cross to the county's official seal.

The ACLU claims the religious symbol violates separation of church and state, arguing it favors the Christian religion over all other religions.

The seal is displayed on buildings, vehicles, and official written communications. County supervisors voted 3-2 in January to put the cross back on the seal in order to make the San Gabriel Mission depiction historically and architecturally accurate.

The original seal had a cross over the Hollywood Bowl, but it was removed when the seal was redesigned in 2004 after the ACLU threatened to sue.
