After nearly 100 people lost their jobs when a Texas Wal-Mart closed down, River of Life Fellowship Church stepped up to give hope in a desperate situation.
KCBD News reports the church invited the employees to a special luncheon on Sunday, where they were surrounded with love and encouragement.
"Those of you who used to work at Wal-Mart…this is a special day for you," senior pastor Mike Barkowsky told the congregation. "We want to show our appreciation today, but not only that. We also believe that God has some amazing things for you."
The church members compiled and played a slideshow of the employees inside the store before they lost their jobs. Many cried but said they were encouraged by the pictures that reflected the close relationships they made with their fellow employees.
"I'm not saying that you should forget the friendships," Pastor Barkowsky said. "But what I'm saying is God has something in front of us to move toward."
Barkowsky was quick to remind the crowd not to fear for the future or where their next paycheck would come from.
"You don't have to have fear about the future because you know everything is going to be alright, because God said everything is going to be alright," he said.
Barkowsky said his message is simple but powerful.
"When people show that they love and they care, I think that is very, very powerful," he said.
The former Wal-Mart employees left encouraged and honored by members of their community.
"People are wanting to honor us and even serve us," former employee Alex Vega said. "It might be something small for some people, but it's a big thing to a bunch of us."
