A typhoon has killed at least 12 people in the Philippines, and with many people reported missing, the death toll could rise.

Although the capital of Manila was spared a direct hit, Typhoon Rammasun still managed to knock down trees and rip the roofs off buildings. The storm also knocked out power to many areas, effectively shutting down the city.

More than 370,000 people evacuated into emergency shelters.

"It was like a drill," Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada said. "We hauled people away from dangerous seaside areas, whether they liked it or not."

The typhoon lost strength before it moved out of the country. Weather officials predict Rammasun could regain power while crossing the South China Sea.
