When It All Goes Wrong—God Makes It Right
Rick and Debbie Francis have been married for over 30 years. They faithfully tithe to their church, give to missions and The Building Fund.
“I had good pastors that taught a Bible perspective on giving when I got my first job, Rick said. “I was in my teens, probably 15-years-old, and I just knew that was the thing to do.”
Over the years they enjoyed God’s faithfulness with good jobs and steady finances, however, within the span of 14 months that all changed when their son, Logan, started needing expensive care.
“Our son, Logan, began to develop some problems and he needed therapy,” Debbie said. “It was going on for months, so that just kept building and building, and it became quite the bill.”
In the midst of all this, Debbie became concerned with Rick’s health, too.
“I started to notice, of course I'm a nurse, that Rick is losing weight, and he's not sleeping,” Debbie said. He's more just weighted down a little bit.”
While the bills piled up and Rick’s health declined with no warning, they found out his job was in jeopardy.
“I'd been with this company 14 years,” Rick said. “They called me in and said, ‘We're going to have to make some cuts for next year, and we're going to have to eliminate your salary and your position with the company.’ So, I was crushed. I was absolutely blindsided by that.”
Debbie said, “Within two weeks, our second business that we had on the side that was bringing in about a thousand dollars a month, we get a phone call, ‘Nope, you're done. We can't do that anymore with you. You're out of here.’"
Rick’s health decline resulted in a 15-day hospital stay. Though grateful for his recovery, they felt overwhelmed by the medical debt.
“After all of that, we had thousands and thousands of dollars worth of medical bills that we weren't counting on, weren't planning for,” Rick said.
The couple remained faithful with their giving and trusted God would provide for their needs.
“I don't know how we're going to do it,” Debbie said. “Rick's not working at this point.
I'm the only one working, and I'm not working as many days as I could because I'm having to help take care of him and help take care of Logan. ‘Okay, God, we're just going to do the right thing. We're going to pay our tithes. We're going to pay our offerings. We're going to chip away at this bill because it's ours to pay, and You're just going to help us out.’”
A Christian organization had been following Rick’s story on social media and reached out to him.
Rick said, “The gentleman that called me said, ‘I'll tell you what. I need you to send me an email with your two most pressing medical bills.’ And about a week later, he called me back and said, ‘The vote was unanimous, the board wants to take care of these bills for you.’ That was $8,000 worth of medical bills. I couldn't believe it, and I knew it was God.”
“God's way of doing things is so much better than ours,” Debbie said. “The same company calls him back and says, ‘We want to bring you back in.’ I'm like, ‘Okay. All right. We've had our respite period. God has paid the bills. Now we can go back to work.’ You can't figure that out yourself. God has got that under control.”
Today Rick and Debbie celebrate Logan’s recovery and are amazed at the faithfulness of God through their financial hardship.
“In 34 years of marriage, we've never had that amount of money come in just out of nowhere, but we've never needed it from out of nowhere before and God supplied that,”
Rick said. “After I went back to work in July, we looked back at our finances and we looked back at money that had come in during that six-month period, and it was as if I was never out of work. That's how much God took care of us financially.”
“It was just a moment of totally being humbled, for sure, and being so grateful,” Debbie said. I can't even tell you how grateful. It was such a blessing.”

“Now I’m Sure There Is a God!”
Mr. Yu worked early in the morning until late at night seven days a week. He had one goal: to keep his son alive. Yixun was born with two holes in his heart.
“He always got colds. He coughed and had fevers,” recounts Mr. Yu. “When I looked at how skinny Yixun was, I worried about how the heart disease would affect his body.”
Yixun's mother abandoned the family.
“She asked for a divorce because she couldn't handle taking care of a sick baby every day and being so poor. My world collapsed,” confesses Mr. Yu. “Yixun’s illness was already hard enough. The loss of my wife made it even harder.”
Since he was a single dad, he had to bring Yixun to work with him. Meanwhile, the holes in Yixun’s heart got bigger. He struggled to breathe and landed in the hospital in a coma.
“His face was pale, and his lips were purple. His body was covered with sweat, and he ended up in ICU,” remembers Mr. Yu. “The doctor told me he was seriously ill. As the holes got bigger, they were keeping his blood from flowing properly, so he had pulmonary hypertension and pneumonia.”
The doctor said Yixun needed surgery, yet as hard as Mr. Yu worked, he couldn’t afford it, and Yixun only got worse. By two, he still couldn’t walk like other kids his age.
“He got tired easily and gasped for air. His mouth was black, and his lips were always bleeding,” Mr. Yu shares. “Every day I was afraid I would lose him. How could I live without him? I felt like there wasn’t any hope for us. We seemed abandoned by the world. Sometimes I thought to myself, ‘Is there is a God, and if so, will He help me?’ I wished He would send us an angel.”
A couple weeks later, Mr. Yu was at a health clinic, where he heard about Operation Blessing and how we help poor children.
“It was a miracle,” exclaims Mr. Yu. “It gave my dark life hope. My son would be saved. I thought to myself at that moment, ‘Maybe God does exist.’”
Thanks to you, Yixun got the heart surgery he needed.
“My son is healed. He’s gained weight and has grown taller. He likes to play and always runs ahead of me. He never gets tired. He has inexhaustible strength,” exclaims Mr. Yu. “I’m grateful to the Operation Blessing donors. Now I want to go to church, and I'm sure there is a God because He listens to the cries of the poor.”

One Accountant’s Advice: “Never Stop Doing This!”
Kemberley Washington is a certified public accountant in New Orleans known as ‘The Tax Angel”. She’s a favorite—on-air, online, and on the You Version Bible application saying, “I have appeared on many media outlets where I share tax tips, consumer tips and I write stories to help consumers. He opened up so many doors, in my life and I knew it had to do with my obedience to Him as far as tithing.”
Kemberely was hired right after college. She explains, “God had allowed me to work for the IRS to learn about all of these different laws, tax laws, but I could use it in a different way where I can really help people.”
At the same time, she started to faithfully tithe rather than occasionally withhold it. Kemberely says, “Extra bills that month, car might even break down, whatever the case. Just seemed like everything would go off in my finances. So I was like, ‘okay, God, let me get back on it’! It was just like financial blessings would happen. That's when I really saw God’s hand just really move on my life.”
Along the way, Kemberely once lost everything she owned, remaining faithful to give, even in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, keeping the financial promise, she’d made to God, at the start of her career. She remembers, “You're just asking God, ‘why’, you know, ‘what is this?’ I’m being honest; I thought God had deserted me. During the time in the ups and downs I continued to tithe. I was blessed. My job did not stop paying me. That was a blessing within itself. I do believe giving to God, putting God first in your finances.”
A relief center provided her with inspiration to assist victims of loss, saying “so I just set up, put a little sign up, CPA, and I just help people with their finances as it relates to taxes, when it comes to a disaster loss. And that was my way of giving back.”
Kemberley also gives to CBN - as a 2500 Club member, stating, “When I can partner with a ministry like CBN, I'm more than grateful to do it. I'm committed to helping partnerships like this. And I like the work that CBN is doing with the broadcast, the prayers. That means a lot to me and so that’s the reason why I give. I am a tither, and I strongly believe because God has done so much for me.”
Her message hasn’t changed. Give. Trust. And never stop! Kimberely says, “Try God and see, He says that even in His word. A blessing that you will not have room enough to receive. Just not in finances. It's the peace in your life, the victories that you'll receive. And if we can support a ministry, support our church, why not do it? And with that, God would even give you, like they say here in New Orleans, “lagniappe” something extra. Right? (laugh). And that's what God has done for me.”
Psalm 41:1 says, “Blessed is he who considers the poor; the LORD will deliver Him in time of trouble.” When you partner with CBN, you do more than just give to the poor. From Struggling Student to Classroom Star: A Superbook Miracle
Ten-year-old Chan Teang (pronounced Jarn dteeng) wanted to do better in school…but she just didn’t know.
“And it’s hard when I see someone in class doing better than me. I get so jealous and angry,” Chan Teang admitted. “I had a hard time learning anything because there was no one at home to help me.”
Chanteang told us she went to live with her grandma after her parents left to work in another city.
“My grandma didn't have much time for me because she was busy taking care of the cows.”
Then she began to attend an after-school program supported by CBN’s Orphan's Promise. She received help with schoolwork and watched episodes of CBN's Superbook.
“I was so excited when I got there!” Chan Teang told us. “Everyone welcomed me and was so kind! Then, the teacher played Superbook for us to watch. The story was so cool! I had never seen a cartoon like it before.
There she saw the episode called “He Is Risen.”
“Jesus died on the cross for my sins,” she realized. “He did nothing wrong, but the army punished him by nailing him to the cross. I wanted to cry. This story taught me that God wants to forgive us and to love others. So, I decided to trust Him as my Savior.”
After she prayed to become a Christian, Chan Teang noticed something happening at school.
“My studies have improved so much! I can now read, write, and even do well in math. I am now in the top five of my class!” she said with delight.
Chan Teang then told her friends about Superbook and invited them to go to church with her.
“Three of my friends now know Jesus and believe in Him because of Superbook, just like me!” Chan Teang exclaimed. “I'm so happy about that. Thanks for giving us, Superbook!”
