NASA Inspector Has Harsh Words for Asteroid Program

09-19-2014

NASA's Near Earth Objects program isn't doing its job too well, according to the agency's inspector general.

The asteroid protection program is supposed to identify potentially dangerous space rocks that could hit the Earth, but Inspector General Paul Martin says the program needs to be better organized and managed.

The NEO program is designed to supposed to find 90 percent of objects close to Earth that are bigger than 460 feet across by the year 2020. So far, however, it's only found about 10 percent and it's not expected to meet that deadline.

"We believe the program would be more efficient, effective and transparent were it organized and managed in accordance with standard NASA research program requirements," Martin said in his 44-page report
