Eating walnuts could help keep your brain healthy as you get older because they may help prevent dementia and Alzheimer's.

According to the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, walnuts contain healthy ingredients, like omega-3 fatty acids and anti-oxidants that are good for your brain.

The researchers studied mice and found a link between walnut consumption and better well-being. They also found that in addition to having a better memory, the mice had better learning and motor skills.

"These findings are very promising and help lay the groundwork for future human studies on walnuts and Alzheimer's disease - a disease for which there is no known cure," lead researcher Dr. Abha Chauhan, Ph.D, said.

"Our study adds to the growing body of research that demonstrates the protective effects of walnuts on cognitive functioning," Chauhan added.

The mice ate approximately the human equivalent of one ounce of walnuts a day.
