The case for medical marijuana may be overstated, according to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

JAMA analyzed 79 studies involving more than 6,000 patients and found there's not enough evidence to show the drug helps many conditions it's supposed to, including anxiety, sleep disorders, and Tourette's syndrome.

The review did find evidence marijuana is effective for treating chronic pain and muscle stiffness in multiple sclerosis.

Medical marijuana is legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia.
