JERUSALEM, Israel -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is criticizing the Presbyterian Church (USA) for its decision to sell its stock in U.S. businesses that operate in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank).
By a 310-303 vote, the PC (USA) voted on Friday to sell an estimated $21 million in stock in Hewlett-Packard, Motorola Solutions, and Caterpillar.
Netanyahu called the vote "disgraceful," saying Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East that protects human rights, including those of Christians, in a region filled with religious hatred and immense savagery.
"It should trouble all people of conscience and morality because it's so disgraceful," Netanyahu charged. "You know, I would suggest to you, those Presbyterian organizations to fly to the Middle East, come and see Israel for the embattled democracy that it is, and then take a bus tour, go to Libya, go to Syria, go to Iraq and see the difference."
"And I would give them two pieces of advice. One is, make sure it's an armor-plated bus, and second, don't say that you're Christians," he said.
Netanyahu also said he wonders why they single out Israel for such treatment.
