JERUSALEM, Israel -- Two terror attacks against Egyptian security forces in the Sinai Sunday killed eight people and wounded 30 others.
At least two people were killed when terrorists detonated a booby-trapped car near a police station in el-Arish, about 30 miles south of Israel. Earlier, terrorists killed six soldiers and wounded two others when a roadside bomb targeted an armored vehicle in Sheikh Zuweid in northern Sinai.
Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, now calling itself the State of Sinai after aligning with the Islamic State, claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Meanwhile, Egypt continues constructing a 5-kilometer (11-mile) buffer zone along the Rafah border separating the Sinai Peninsula from the Gaza Strip. The intention is to prevent infiltration of weapons and jihadists by destroying any smuggling tunnels, the Daily News Egypt reported.
On March 29, Egyptian forces uncovered a 2,800-meter tunnel, surpassing a 2,500-meter tunnel discovered in mid-February.
The government of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is intent on dismantling Sinai-based terror groups, which flourished under ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
