JERUSALEM, Israel -- Ever innovative, the Israeli-based Waze navigation system, purchased by Google two years ago, is testing a new application this summer to match up people looking for rides with drivers headed in the same direction.
The application, called RideWith, uses the Waze mapping system to help people connect with drivers using routes compatible with their needs.
"We're conducting a small, private beta test in the greater Tel Aviv area for a carpool concept, but we have nothing further to announce at this time," Waze told Reuters.
Two years ago Google purchased Waze, which provides drivers with real-time navigation and mapping information, for a whopping $1 billion.
While people will pay a small fee to help cover fuel and maintenance costs, the program limits drivers to two rides a day so it doesn't qualify as a business.
