JERUSALEM, Israel -- Former Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski was sentenced to six years in prison for his role in the Holyland real estate affair.
Tel Aviv District Court Judge David Rozen, who last month sentenced former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to six years behind bars, said Lupolianski undermined the public's trust in its leaders.
Though Lupolianski, founder of the Jerusalem-based Yad Sarah, a humanitarian organization that helps handicapped and elderly Israelis, is battling cancer, Rozen said he could receive the medical care he needed in prison.
Nine people have been convicted of various corruption and bribery changes in the Holyland scandal. The investigation against leading businessmen, bankers and politicians, has been going on behind the scenes for the past several years.
