A New Mexico judge has ruled that terminally ill patients can choose to end their lives with a doctor's help.

Judge Nan Nash issued the ruling in January allowing physicians to legally prescribe lethal doses of medicine to dying patients.

"This court cannot envision a right more fundamental, more private, or more integral to the liberty, safety, and happiness of a New Mexican than the right of a competent, terminally ill patient to choose aid in dying," Nash wrote in her 14-page opinion.

Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Montana, and Hawaii, all allow physician assisted suicide.
