A nationwide movement is underway to reform the criminal justice system. Many states are examining ways to reduce prison overcrowding, unfair sentencing, and the tendency of inmates to relapse into criminal behavior.
Congress has included a measure in the 2014 budget to study reforms in the federal corrections system.
It sets aside $1 million for the Charles Colson Task Force on Federal Corrections. The nine-member panel will examine specific problems, including violence in federal prisons, prisoner rehabilitation and employment, and reducing the prison population.
The Task Force is named for the late Chuck Colson, who founded Justice Fellowship to advocate for Biblically-based prison reforms and restorative justice.
