As America honors Martin Luther King, Jr. Monday, Jan. 20, many conservatives say his belief in Christian values and a desire for a colorblind America have been forgotten.

In a time when abortion and same-sex marriage are increasingly accepted, some people have become more vocal about King's conservative values.

Florida Today reports conservatives point to the ideas they share with King, such as traditional families, civic responsibility, moral character, and patriotism.

Critics point out King also called for avoiding war. One expert told the paper King's politics rose above Democratic or Republican.

President Ronald Reagan signed the Martin Luther King holiday into law in 1983. Monday would have been his 85th birthday.
