Open Road Films' new animated movie "The Nut Job" hits theaters across the nation Friday.

The movie follows the adventures of a squirrel and his rat sidekick as they seek to pull off a nut store heist.

"Here's an animated kids' feature based on an animated not-for-kids' short that's packed with far, far less nutty fun than its title might suggest," writes Plugged In Online film critic Bob Hoose.

Also in theaters is "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," starring actors Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, and Keira Knightley.

"Director Kenneth Branagh reboots the Tom Clancy-penned hero's tale (and quickly strays into territory the late author never trod), serving up something of an alternative origin story bedazzled by ticking clocks, backroom espionage, racing vehicles, and smash-dash action-action-action," Hoose writes.

So which film is worth taking your family to the theater for this season? Plugged In Online Director Bob Waliszewski answered that question on CBN News Today, Jan. 17.
