President Barack Obama is pushing for more access to higher education for low-income students.

The president and first lady met with leaders from more than 100 colleges and universities Wednesday at the White House. All agreed to take action to help disadvantaged students.

They'll do so by engaging low-income students as early as elementary school, encouraging them to pursue higher education, and by boosting college advising and entrance exam preparation, among other strategies.

"When the president has a call to action on this area, it is because it is a critical measure for us being true to our values of economic mobility," Gene Sperling, director of the White House's National Economic Council, the Huffington Post reported.
