A Pennsylvania judge has struck down a nearly 2-year-old voter ID law.

The measure required nearly all the state's voters to show photo identification when at the polls.

"Voting laws are designed to assure a free and fair election; the Voter ID Law does not further this goal," Commonwealth Court Judge Bernard L. McGinley wrote.

The law was enacted by Gov. Tom Corbett, R-Pa., in March 2012 and has been one of the strictest in the nation.

Many Democrats oppose the measure, saying it deprives people the right to vote.

Friday's decision sets up a possible courtroom battle before Pennsylvania's highest court.
