CBN.comFormer New York Yankee Mariano Rivera is scoring big, but not on the field this time.
The city of New Rochelle, N.Y., sold an abandoned Presbyterian church building to the retired baseball star for $1. He then invested $3 million in what's now the Refuge of Hope Church.
The Pentecostal church is led by his wife Clara. Rivera called it a privilege to fulfill a dream that God put in their hearts.
"This is to help families, to bring people close to the Lord," he said.
New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson said his jaw dropped at Rivera's generosity.
"It's obvious that an enormous amount of love and care and attention has been poured into this church," he said.
Bramson credited Rivera with two saves: preserving a key part of the city's history, while playing a role in its future.
The church, located just a few miles north of Yankee Stadium, will also provide educational and sports-oriented after-school activities.
