Raisin Program Draws Skepticism from Supreme Court

04-23-2015

Can the government put the squeeze on farmers who grow raisins? That was the question before the Supreme Court Wednesday.

The federal program that forces raisin producers to turn over part of their annual crop to the government came from a 1937 law to keep prices steady by managing the amount of raisins on the market.

Two California farmers say the program is forbidden by the Constitution, and several justices seemed to agree.

The justices expressed their doubts federal officials can legally take raisins away from farmers without giving them a full payment.

Justice Antonin Scalia compared it to old-style Soviet planning.
