President Barack Obama is calling for a full review of the U.S. drone strikes that accidentally killed two hostages in Pakistan back in January.

The airstrikes killed hostages Warren Weinstein of Maryland and Italian aid worker Giovanni Lo Porto. Both men were being held captive in an al Qaeda camp in a mountainous region of Pakistan.

CIA officials say they monitored the terrorist compound for hundreds of hours and saw no signs of civilians there.

It was too late when they realized an American and an Italian aid worker were being held hostage in that same camp.

"In the fog of war generally and in the fight against terrorists specifically, mistakes - sometimes deadly - can occur," Obama said.

The drone strikes also killed two other Americans: Adam Gadahn and Ahmed Farouq, a dual U.S.-Pakistani national. They were both al Qaeda operatives.
