Ferguson, Missouri, saw another night of unrest as protesters tried to mark the anniversary of the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
The young black man died at the hands of a white police officer, who was later cleared of wrongdoing.
Police arrested nearly two dozen people Monday evening. The arrests came at gathering that stretched into earlyTuesday morning.
"Unfortunately this has been marred all the good work on both sides of the street has been marred by violence and that's why we have to be here and it's unfortunate," St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said.
Many people spent Monday peacefully protesting, but that was interrupted early by gunfire and a police shooting that left an 18-year-old critically injured. Some are now questioning that shooting.
The 18-year-old's father, Tyrone Harris Sr., told reporters his son "was on an outing, a peaceful outing."
"From what I heard, he was there with some friends, and the friends had a confrontation. And he happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time," Harris said.
Officers were forced to don riot gear Monday night as they worked to prevent a repeat of the violence and looting the city saw Sunday.
Police also made arrests at demonstrations that blocked a busy highway and scuffles at a protest at the federal courthouse.
