Montana Man, Wives Seek Legal Polygamy

08-31-2015

The legalization of same-sex marriage has prompted a Montana man, his wife, and his common-law wife to file a federal lawsuit to strike down the state's laws against bigamy.

Nathan Collier and his wives argue it unconstitutionally prevents them from legitimizing their polygamous relationship.

They say the Supreme Court's ruling legalizing gay marriage supports their case because it said marriage cannot be limited to just two people from the opposite sex.

According to TIME, the three said they were treated at the courthouse in a way that made themfeel "violated."

"We feel entitled for a legal legitimacy and for [the Yellowstone County Courthouse] to deny this is a violation of our civil rights," they said. "We feel the marriage equality law applies to us."
