Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is facing the wrath of the American Left after he came out late last week against President Barack Obama's nuclear deal with Iran.
The Hill newspaper reports that liberal activists and former top Obama administration officials believe his action may disqualify him from being the next Democratic leader of the Senate after Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada retires in 2017.
Liberal groups are pushing hard for the nuclear deal with Iran.
However, with Schumer and several leading Jewish House Democrats -- including Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee -- opposing the plan, the president could have a tougher road getting it approved in Congress.
The Media Line in Israel reported that the feeling within the hard left activist group MoveOn.org is that "Schumer can forget about donations it controls."
White House press secretary Josh Earnest admitted after Schumer's announcement that it reflects a deep split over Iran that has continued for years.
"There's no denying that this difference of opinion that emerged overnight is one that has existed between Senator Schumer and President Obama for more than a decade," Earnest said.
