Five months after a Muslim man killed four Marines and one sailor in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the FBI is calling it terrorism.

On Wednesday, FBI Director James Comey told reporters the July 16 attack was "inspired and motivated by terrorist propaganda."

Comey said Muhammad Abdulazeez, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was "consuming poison on the Internet" that led to his radicalization.

Investigators also found writings that referred to Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S.-born cleric who called for attacks on the United States.

The announcement clears the way for families of the victims to receive the Purple Heart.

Some questioned why it took the bureau so long to call the Chattanooga shootings a terror attack when it took only days to label the San Bernardino, California, attack terrorism.
