The second phase of jury selection for the trial of accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev starts Thursday.

U.S. District Court Judge George O'Toole will begin interviewing 1,200 prospective jurors in groups of 20, selecting 12 and six alternates.

Prosecutors are reportedly seeking the death penalty for Tsarnaev, the youngest of the two suspects in the 2013 bombing, which killed three people and injured 200. Tsarnaev's brother, Tamerlan, was killed in a firefight with police.

The judge must determine if an applicant has the ability to listen impartially to testimony and determine the defendant's guilt or innocence on the basis of evidence.

Prospective jurors must also be willing to vote for the death penalty if it comes to that.

More than 1,300 people filled out the lengthy questionnaire for potential jurors last week.
