Former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo has died at the age of 82.

Cuomo died New Year's Day just after his son, Andrew Cuomo, was sworn-in for a second term as New York's current governor.

The elder Cuomo was hospitalized for heart failure in November, right after his son won re-election.

Mario Cuomo was the son of Italian immigrants. He served three terms as New York governor, from 1983 to 1994.

He was a staunch liberal and is remembered best for his scathing criticism of then-President Ronald Regan.

Cuomo seriously considered a run for president of the United States in 1994, but decided against it at the last minute.

The winner of that election, now former President Bill Clinton, wanted to nominate Mario Cuomo to the U.S. Supreme Court, but he declined.

Mario Cuomo is survived by his wife Matilda and five children, including Chris Cuomo, a television newscaster, and Maria, who is married to fashion designer Kenneth Cole.
