January 16 is Religious Freedom Day, which commemorates the the 1786 passage of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom.
This statute became the basis for the U.S. Constitution and the First Amendment.
This past year was a banner year for religious liberty cases.
The Supreme Court ruled in the Hobby Lobby Case that the company does not have to set aside its religious convictions on birth control to comply with a government mandate on contraception.
The high court also let a New Mexico ruling stand that said a wedding photographer who refused to photograph a gay wedding was violating the state's human rights act.
