The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear North Carolina's appeal to revive a law requiring doctors show women an ultrasound of their unborn babies before performing an abortion.
The decision leaves in place the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' finding that the law was a violation of the First Amendment.
"Transforming the physician into the mouthpiece of the state undermines the trust that is necessary for facilitating healthy doctor-patient relationships and, through them, successful treatment outcomes," the court ruled.
The high court also allowed Mississippi's sole remaining abortion clinic to stay open.
The justices rejected an appeal to reinstate a law that requires abortion doctors have admitting privileges at local hospitals.
