NC Gov. Will Sign 72-Hour Wait for Abortion

06-04-2015

There will soon be a 72-hour waiting period for abortions in North Carolina.

By a vote of 71-43, the state's General Assembly passed a bill Wednesday that Republican Gov. Pat McCrory agreed to sign.

"Working with House and Senate members, we ensured that contact, including a simple phone call, would start a reasonable process that protects women's health, and we also more clearly and rationally defined medical training and qualifications to ensure there will be no further restrictions on access," McCrory said in a statement late Wednesday.

In addition to extending the waiting period from one day to three, the bill also adds other requirements for doctors and clinics that perform abortions.

North Carolina would join Missouri, South Dakota and Utah, which already have waiting periods for abortions.

Oklahoma's law goes into effect in November.
