The terrifying shark attacks in North Carolina this past weekend are reminding people that beach season can also mean shark season.

Two teenagers, a 13-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, swimming in waist-deep water lost limbs in two different shark attacks on Oak Island. The attacks occurred within 90 minutes of each other.

Both victims, whose names are not being released, arrived in critical condition after being airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina.

They've both had amputations -- hers at the elbow and his below the shoulder. They've since been upgraded to "fair condition."

Tracy Carnes, one of the first on-duty paramedics at the scene, told CNN it was the bystanders' help that saved the girl's life.

"The outpouring of help from the bystanders was amazing. The tourniquets were in place by the time I got there," Carnes told CNN.

The attacks both happened at high tide near Ocean Crest Pier, a popular destination among beachgoers and a popular spot for fishermen.

Oak Island Beach remained open Monday. Though the beaches were packed, almost no one was in the water.

Now fears are spreading to other states. Last week, a boy was bitten by a shark in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Experts recommend avoiding the water during darkness or twilight hours and staying away from piers where fish are drawn by bait.
