QUANTICO, Va - After months and countless hours of training and practice, some 250 "warrior athletes" begin their drive to compete for gold.
Hundreds of family, friends, and spectators attended the opening ceremony Friday as the Department of Defense officially kicked off the 2015 Warrior Games.
"After inspiring us with your service on duty, you continue to do so this week," Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said, addressing the participants and the crowd.
For the next nine days, wounded and injured services members and veterans from the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Special Operations will compete in eight sporting events after having qualified in nationwide trials and clinics. A team from the British Armed Forces is also participating.
Some of the adaptive sporting events include archery, track and field, wheelchair volleyball, swimming, and cycling.
