A Florida church is asking for prayer Tuesday after one of its vans crashed into a ditch, killing eight people and injuring 10 others.
Police are still trying to find out what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The Florida Highway Patrol said a preliminary investigation showed that the vehicle, which was carrying 18 people, was traveling east-bound on SR-78 after midnight Monday when it passed through a stop sign.
The van then traveled across all lanes of US-27 and crashed into a steep, partially water-filled canal.
One of the survivors from the crash says he managed to escape and flag down a car to call 911.
"I said, 'I need help! I need help!' Nobody can help me so keep raising my hand after I fell down," he explained.
The van is from the Independent Haitian Assembly of God. It was headed home after a weekend convention in Fort Meyers, Florida.
"This is our church. This is all the people we know, all the people we love," Mara Lexine, a family member of one of the victims, said. "We are very, very close; we just ask for your prayers."
