The Indiana state Senate has passed a new bill that bans abortions based on gender, disease, or risk factors for a physical or mental disability.
Many pro-abortion people oppose the bill but pro-life forces are celebrating.
One supportor, Patti Shaw, learned her daughter had Down syndrome when she was five months pregnant.
"There were family and friends that were scratching their head saying, 'What are you going to do?' and I said, 'What do you mean what am I going to do? This is our child; this is our baby,'" Shaw said.
Her daughter Katie is now 29. She works, she participates in a half-dozen sports, and she's an advocate for her peers.
Numbers from the non-profit group Down Syndrome Indiana show that more than half of all babies with the genetic disorder in the United States are aborted.
