Police in Ferguson, Missouri, have arrested a man in connection with the protest shooting that put two officers in the hospital.
Jeffrey Williams, 20, was taken into custody Sunday night and charged with first-degree assault.
Williams opened fire from a truck last Thursday around midnight as a protest was coming to a close outside the city's police department.
The attack came just hours after the resignation of Police Chief Tom Jackson, who stepped down after a Department of Justice report found widespread racially biased practices in the department.
"This arrest sends a clear message that acts of violence against our law enforcement personnel will never be tolerated," U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement.
Williams told authorities the officers were not the intended targets and that he was firing at someone else after a dispute.
Both officers were seriously hurt but are expected to recover.
