CBN.comThe Episcopal church is making history. The denomination installed its first black presiding bishop in a ceremony at the Washington National Cathedral this weekend.
Bishop Michael Curry succeeds Katharine Jefferts Schori, who is the church's first female presiding bishop. Schori held the post for nine years.
Bishop Curry is 62 years old and grew up in Buffalo, New York.
He served about 15 years in the the Diocese of North Carolina until the church overwhelmingly elected him as its new leader last summer.
The Episcopal denomination has nearly 2 million members. But that membership is shrinking amid tensions over Episcopal support of gay marriage.
Curry is urging Episcopalians to evangelize by crossing the divisions of race, education and wealth.
