New research shows that people who carry fat on their waistlines could face a higher risk of death than someone who is obese.
The study Annals of Internal Medicine shows that having a pot belly is actually worse than being obese overall.
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, CBC, researchers find that people who are overweight tend to carry fat around their hips and thighs, which is not as deadly.
"There are many different names for it," said study co-author Thais Coutinho, a cardiologist at the Ottawa Heart Institute. "There's the apple shape as opposed to the pear shape, there's a muffin top, there's a beer belly. A spare tire. But basically, it is exactly what it sounds like: if somebody has a disproportionately large abdomen compared to other parts of the body."
Fat that builds around the abdominal organs is specifically linked to diabetes, heart disease and other problems.
But getting rid of the extra pounds around the midrift is not as easy as doing a sit-up. Doctors suggest healthy diet, enough physical activity to burn extra calories, as well as a tape measure to monitor your progress.
