In the aftermath of the shooting at Oregon's Umpqua Community College, pastors and other first responders rushed to a staging area where survivors and their families reunited.
One clergyman, Pastor Jon Nutter, was one of about two dozen local pastors to offer counsel and shoulders to cry on for parents and other grieving relatives.
"They had been waiting for a long time, hoping, praying," Nutter, pastor of Hucrest Community Church of God, recalled. "People were crying, yelling. Some families were angry; others going into denial and shock."

Grant Goins serves as an associate pastor at Roseburg Alliance Church.
"It's important for us to just listen," he said. "We don't know how to grieve; we want to pretend death is not coming. We tell people it's okay to cry, to give others a hug, to sing Amazing Grace."
