Georgia Bill Would Give Religious Exemption on LGBT Matters

A bill being considered by a Georgia Senate committee would allow religious schools, adoption agencies and government workers to deny services to same-sex couples.

Georgia legislators have proposed at least eight religious exemption measures this year during the first session since the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in 2015.

Gay rights backers say the proposals are discriminatory, and business leaders say they could harm tourism and the economy.

Supporters say people who have a faith-based objection to gay marriage should not be denied government contracts or jobs.
