The faculty at Wheaton College is telling the school not to fire a controversial professor who has been defending Islam.
The Christian college has initiated the termination process against Larycia Hawkins. But the Wheaton College Faculty Council is unanimously opposing that idea, citing "grave concerns about the process."
Hawkins made headlines late last year when she put on an Islamic headscarf and publicly argued that Christians and Muslims worship the same God.
College officials say they began the effort to fire Hawkins because she refused to participate in "clarifying conversations" about theology. Hawkins denies that.
In a statement Thursday, Wheaton said its administration respects the viewpoints of the faculty council, but it is following the college's established process for handling employment decisions for tenured faculty members.
Hawkins said she's still pursuing reconciliation with Wheaton.
