Five-year-old Royce Thompson was running late for kindergarten one morning, but that didn't stop him from taking a moment to honor God and his country.
When Heather Nelson dropped her son off outside his elementary school, she was worried he would not make it to class in time.
Then her anxiety turned to confusion when Thompson suddenly stopped outside the school entrance and bowed his head.
"I couldn't really tell what he was doing and I was saying 'Royce..go..go' as kids walked around him," Nelson wrote in a Facebook post explaining the incident.
It wasn't until a school police officer stepped in that Nelson realized what was going on.
"The officer said, 'Mom he's doing good, he stopped for the Pledge of Allegiance,'" Nelson writes.
After he finished reciting the Pledge of Allegiance with his hand over his heart, he began praying for America.
"Since they do not have prayer in schools he says a little prayer silently," she wrote in her Facebook post.
When Nelson asked her son why he stopped to pray and say the Pledge of Allegiance, Thompson had a simple reply: "Duh, mom. It's what you're supposed to do."
"I was so proud that he stopped when the Pledge of Allegiance came and stood his ground and did not move as the other kids were going in, and then took time out and prayed and did not even care or think twice about it," she wrote.
