Ariz. State Senator Promotes Faith Protections Bill

09-07-2014

An Arizona state senator hopes a revised bill protecting religious freedom will become law this year.

Republican Sen. Steve Yarbrough says Senate Bill 1062 was prompted by a New Mexico case in which the state Supreme Court allowed a gay couple to sue a photographer for refusing to take their wedding pictures.

The bill allows people to refuse service to gays or other groups because of their religious beliefs. A similar bill was vetoed last year.

The current measure no longer contains a provision from last year's bill that allowed lawsuits by religious groups over potential violations of their rights.

Civil rights groups testified before the Senate Government and Environment Committee on Thursday, saying SB 1062 allows businesses to discriminate.

Still, the committee approved the measure on a 4-2 party line vote.
