Carroll County Commissioners in Maryland say they'll reluctantly obey a federal judge's order banning them from opening meetings with Christian prayers.
On March 25, U.S. district judge in Baltimore ordered Carroll County officials to stop opening meetings with prayers in the name of Jesus.
The commissioners initially defied the order. But in a 3-2 vote Tuesday, the five-member board approved a resolution to use only non-sectarian prayers to open their meetings.
Richard Rothschild was one of two commissioners who opposed the move, saying it would force him "to refuse to acknowledge the Son of God."
"I humbly and respectfully declare that I cannot and will not sign a document that forward binds me to enact disobedience against my Christian faith," The Baltimore Sun quoted Rothschild.
The resolution runs through Aug. 1, when they hope the U.S. Supreme Court will have ruled on a similar dispute in New York state.
