New Bills in SD Protect Faith-Based Business

09-07-2014

Two new measures in South Dakota aim to protect pastors and businesses who refuse to take part in gay weddings.

The bills, introduced in the state legislature, would prevent lawsuits in cases where clergymen or business owners cite religious beliefs for not participating in same-sex marriages or receptions.

The measures' main sponsor, State Sen. Ernie Otten, says a baker shouldn't be sued for not making a cake for a gay couple.

The South Dakota constitution and state law currently ban gay marriage.
