Report: 2013 Best Year for Charitable Giving

09-07-2014

The year 2013 was the best for non-profit fundraising since the Great Recession, according to Blackbaud's Charitable Giving Report.

Last year "really showed that the fundraising environment is continuing to improve for the vast majority of organizations," Steve MacLaughlin, co-author of the Charitable Giving Report and director of Blackbaud's Idea Lab, said.

Some of the key findings of the report are:

  • Overall charitable giving grew 4.9 percent in 2013, with online giving growing 13.5 percent.
  • Online giving to faith-based organizations grew the most.
  • Large organizations had the greatest increase in overall charitable giving, while small organizations had the greatest increase in online giving.
  • More than one-third of overall charitable giving happened in the last three months of the year, with the highest percentage coming in December.

The Blackbaud Index tracks $12.5 billion in U.S.-based charitable giving from more than 4,000 organizations on a monthly basis.
