Wisconsin U. Removes Bibles from School Lodge

09-07-2014

The University of Wisconsin has removed Bibles from all 137 guest rooms in its Madison Extension lodging facility.

The move comes after a guest complained to the Freedom From Religion Foundation about a Bible in one of the rooms.

The atheist group complained to then UW-Extension Chancellor Ray Cross, who agreed to remove the Bibles. Cross thanked the group for making him aware of the concern and vowed the Bibles would be removed by Dec. 1.

Staff attorney Patrick Elliott said private hotels can put any type of literature they want in their guest rooms, but state-run colleges must remain neutral toward religion.

The atheist group calls the decision a victory for separation of church and state.
