Mexican authorities captured Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, one of the top drug traffickers in the world during a weekend sting.

Guzman, the head of Mexico's most powerful drug gang, has eluded authorities in both the United States and Mexico for years.

Guzman's cartel is responsible for 25 percent of all drugs entering the United States, and prosecutors in California, New York, and Texas all want him tried in their jurisdiction.

It would be unusual, however, for Mexican authorities to release such a high-profile suspect before first trying him there.

"It would be massive black eye on the [Mexican] government if he is able to escape again. That's the only reason they would turn him over," former Drug Enforcement Administration official Michael S. Vigil said.
