Abrams: Syrian Regime Using al Qaeda to Fight

Leaders from the Syrian regime and opposition forces are set to begin direct talks Friday.

The country's government is already downplaying any progress in those talks, saying fighting terrorism is its priority not peace talks.

But Syrian rebel groups say the government is behind any terrorism, claiming the Assad regime has brought al Qaeda fighters into the country to oppose them.

Former Bush administration official Elliot Abrams agreed. He said Assad's relationship with the terrorists dates back at least 10 years.

"Throughout the Iraq War, jihadis were flooding into Iraq to kill Americans. How did they get into Iraq? They flew to the Damascus International Airport where Syrian government escorted them into Iraq," Abrams said. "That is the way they got into Iraq--Syria!"

Abrams said nothing good is going to come from the Syria peace talks. He added that the Geneva conference was a bad idea from the start.
