The interim leader of the Central African Republic declared an end to the era of anarchy, warning Muslim and Christian militias to stop the violence.
African leaders appointed Alexandre Ferdinand Nguendet to head the national council after pressuring former President Michel Djotodia to step down following months of religious violence.
Djotodia took power in a coup about nine months ago. His Muslim rebel coalition then began attacking Christians, who responded by forming their own militias.
The religious war has left at least 1,000 people dead and nearly 1 million displaced from their homes.
Nguendet is now urging law enforcement officers to return to their posts and help stop the bloodshed.
"The pillaging and the chaos are over," Nguendet told police officers on Monday. "I'm calling for your help in re-establishing security across all of Central African Republic."
Christian ministries serving the persecuted Church are at work helping the refugees.
Open Doors USA reports the refugee camps are overcrowded and unsanitary, and the people there are facing food and water shortages.
Despite the difficulties, the Christians still gather for worship. Barnabas Aid is helping 150 Christian families in one camp.
